Boat disposal

One thing up front: I'm not a disposal company. If you want to dispose of an old GRP boat, I help you find a certified disposal partner in Austria. The boat recycling is then carried out in an environmentally sound and technically correct way.

A boat clearly destined for disposal

Why GRP boats are hard to dispose of

Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was regarded as an experiment in its early days. Many traditional boat builders didn't trust the new material much and estimated its lifespan at a few decades.

Today, more than half a century later, numerous GRP boats from the 1960s are still afloat – clear proof of the material's astonishing durability, at least as far as the hull is concerned. But even though GRP lasts a long time, the ravages of time don't stop. The technology becomes outdated, equipment no longer meets today's standards, and a full refit eventually becomes unavoidable.

Often, however, the cost of that exceeds the value of the boat. If on top of that moisture has penetrated the sandwich core or load-bearing timber parts have rotted, in the end a sensible repair is often no longer up for debate – instead the question becomes how to dispose of the decayed hull. And that turns out to be more complicated than you'd think: a boat quickly becomes a case for hazardous-waste disposal.

Sell vs dispose – when is disposal worthwhile?

If you're not sure whether your boat is still worth anything at all, a survey helps

We look at your boat together and assess the options based on its condition. Should it turn out that a sale is no longer really an option, I'll find you a disposal partner who recycles a boat in an environmentally sound way.
